KAFOPHAN focuses on uplifting the status of all its members through its livelihood improvement projects which focus on boosting the standards of its members and the communities we serve. These activities not only focus on People living with HIV and AIDS but rather the greater communities where our people live.
Over the years, KAFOPHAN has trained 5290 people in Business skills with an aim of changing the way people do their work. As a result, communities have acquired skills on how best they can incubate, manage and sustainably run their businesses.
In a bid to increase income levels and improve social welfare of our members and the communities we serve, we have extended to over 250 people with income generating activities. Many of these have grown into successful businesses uplifting social status of people from vulnerability to success.
Together with our partners AVSI Foundation, KAFOPHAN introduced Village Savings and Loans Associations methodology in the islands in 2014. This mechanism has inculcated a savings culture among the population with over 230 VSLAs sustainably formed with over 6000 participants.
The main beneficiary group of KAFOPHAN programs include people regarded as key population like commercial sex workers, uniformed personnel, plantation workers, Men having sex with men, Exposed Infants and fisher folk. People living with HIV (PLHIV) are members and part of the general population in different households in the District.
KAFOPHAN has implemented activities that promote children wellbeing especially children living with HIV through advocating for special clinic days for children, adolescent friendly services as well as promoting better parenting. KAFOPHAN has also built a strong sponsorship program for children. KAFOPHAN implements activities that retain learners in school and improve learners’ welfare on sexual and reproductive health rights.
Through AHF supported project, KAFOPHAN worked with health centers to retain 2,919 HIV positive clients in 5 health centres of Kalangala Health center IV, Bukasa Health centre IV, Lulamba Health centre III, Bwendero Health centre III and Mugoye health centre III into care using community support model led by HIV positive peers. The Viral suppression rate also increased from 73% to 96% in a space of 1 year of project implementation from November 2021 to October 2022.
The HIV retention project is being implemented under Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) with support from PEPFAR where 1027 HIV positive clients are retained in care in Mugoye Health centre III. This has been achieved through regular home visits, tracing TB clients, and monitoring clients who miss appointments. Retention improved from 76% in 2020 to 97% in 2023.
KAFOPHAN is implementing DREAMS project in Kalangala District where 2895 Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) have been served. The DREAMS program targets prevention of HIV/AIDS among AGYW through behavioral change programs and services like condom promotion, family planning, post violence care, and social economic strengthening. Over 2 years, 2895 AGYW received services, 602 accessed family planning, 132 were initiated on PrEP, 918 received post-violence care, 1011 got condoms, and 4 tested HIV+ and were linked to care. 372 AGYW were supported with education subsidies and 1002 were trained in vocational skills and given start-up kits. Male partners were also reached with PrEP, HTS, and other services.
